Reign of Winter
For many years, an organization of Taldan rangers called the High Sentinels operated out of the Southern Prefecture of Taldan near Heldren. Headquartered in a fortified lodge which bore their name, this group was charged with guarding the forest against Qadiran aggression, lest Taldor’s ancient enemy use the wood to hide another invasion force. They grew into a formidable and prestigious organization of local fame and reknown, but over time the continued lack of hostility with Qadira dulled the sharpness of the Sentinels.
Most of the unit’s decorated veterans either retired or moved on to other posts, leaving inexperienced citizens of Heldren and the nearby cities of Demgazi and Zimar to fill out the ranks. The Sentinels soon turned their attention to more local matters, hunting down bandits who used the forest to attack trade routes in the southern prefectures of Taldor. Although still recognized locally, they are not nearly feared as they once were and are treated as little more than local militia mercenaries. Still when there is trouble in the region, the High Sentinels are the first ones the populace turns to.
