Reign of Winter
The Hoarwood Forest is the only sizeable woodland within the ever-winter realm of Irrisen. Located in the southeast of the country within the province that bears its name, the Hoarwood Forest is the predominant natural feature of the province. Early in the history of the nation, the Hoarwood extended to the shores of the Glacier Lake and was widely forested. However, the White Witches soon realized that if the practice was to continue the forest would be wiped out and now it is tightly regulated with unlawful logging deemed punishable by death. The forest’s coniferous trees are tall and perpetually covered in snow.
Many rumours of danger exist about the forest, including glades that prematurely age those who wander through them, and a deserted village now haunted by black crows. Because of the danger, very few of the province’s settlements actually reside within the boundaries of the forest. One of the few exceptions is the capital of Hoarwood. As retaliation for a revolt, the White Witches destroyed a sacred oak at the heart of the forest and forced the remaining residents to live within the shell of the dead tree as a reminder of the Witches power and authority. Today the city of Hoarwood is the third largest city of Irrisen with nearly 9,000 inhabitants.
